WATERBURY HOSPITAL CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT, NICU DIRECTOR WIN CHAMBER HONORS

The Greater Waterbury Regional Chamber of Commerce honored the Waterbury Hospital Cardiology Department and Dr. Brooke Redmond at its annual Health Care Council Awards breakfast on Aug. 15.

Organizational Excellence Award

The Waterbury Hospital Cardiology Department was honored with the Organizational Excellence Award for its work in bringing state of the art cardiac procedures and cardiac care to Greater Waterbury, most especially its recent work in the Chest Pain Accreditation.

In June, The American College of Cardiology recognized Waterbury Hospital with Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

Waterbury Hospital is the only hospital in Connecticut to hold this accreditation delivering excellent cardiovascular patient care, including faster treatment, better prognoses, better quality of life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention also known as angioplasty) Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms and have primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year.

Unsung Hero Award

Dr. Redmond, Medical Director, Waterbury Hospital Neonatal ICU and assistant professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine received the Unsung Hero Award for her work with local EMS community and in particular the statewide pilot program 24/7 BABY that gives first responders access to neonatologist expertise 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dr. Redmond has offered hands-on training to emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in the Waterbury, Connecticut, area to help prepare them for such emergencies as births outside the hospital setting. In April she created a new program that will allows her and other neonatologists to provide support during emergencies.

The goal of the 24/7 BABY program is to improve outcomes for babies born outside of a hospital setting by ensuring first responders have guidance when they most need it.

Waterbury Hospital Cardiology Department and Dr. Redmond were among four individuals and two organizations honored for their outstanding contributions in the Greater Waterbury’s healthcare field at a ceremony last month.
