March is National Nutrition Month
In 1973 one week in March was declared Nutrition week, to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition, how to improve your day-to-day diet, promote the dietetics field and give nutrition education.
In 1980 it became a month-long observance in response to the country's growing interest in nutrition.
From the very beginning there has always been a different theme, each highlighting different important aspects of nutrition. This year's theme is “Food Connects Us”.
Through the month of March, we will explore all the ways food connects us. Because there are four weeks in the month of March there are 4 different focuses on foods connection to different things in our lives.
Week one “Connect with food” explores our connection with our food. Where it comes from, how it's prepared, and where to find support when having difficulty accessing food.
Week two “Connect with a nutrition expert” involves learning the roles dietitians play in our care and the benefits of seeing a dietitian.
Week three “Explore the connection between food and culture” investigates all the way food is a connection to culture near and far away.
Week four “Build the connection across all stages of life” involves how eating can change as you age and the role of all foods in that.
