WATERBURY HOSPITAL HOSTS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS AS PART OF CAREERS IN HEALTHCARE EXPOSURE PROGRAM

Published:

Waterbury Hospital hosted ten Waterbury Public School middle schoolers as part of the 2025 Providing Early Acquaintance with Careers in Healthcare (PEACH) Program.

Since its inception in 2004, Waterbury Hospital’s PEACH Program has engaged administrators, teachers, and students in the Waterbury Public Schools to address the projected shortage of healthcare workers in the area and to close the achievement gap for students in Waterbury Public Schools. Through the program, students engage with healthcare workers in a non-emergency setting and to learn about a variety of healthcare careers available in our community.

The one-week program incorporates job shadowing and hands on learning. This year’s program included job shadowing, hands on learning including CPR and Stop the Bleed training, as well as tours of different areas of the hospital. In addition, students learned about financial literacy from representatives from Liberty Bank.

PEACH is one of several programs that are part of the Youth Pipeline Initiative, formed in 2001 as a collaboration between Waterbury Hospital and Waterbury Public Schools to close the achievement gap for minority and economically disadvantaged students in Waterbury so they can matriculate and compete for college placement.

This is one of four programs for middle and high schoolers being held at Waterbury Hospital. A one-week program will take place April 22 and 23 with 12 Wolcott High School Student participating.
