DR. BROOKE REDMOND NAMED ‘PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR’ BY CONNECTICUT EMS
Waterbury Hospital Chair of Pediatrics and Medical Director of the Neonatal ICU and Newborn Nursery Dr. Brooke Redmond has been named Physician of the Year by Connecticut EMS Advisory Board.
Dr. Redmond, a Yale Medicine board-certified neonatal critical care physician, is the creator and director of the 24/7 BABY program, an innovative partnership between Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. Yale’s 24/7 BABY program – the first of its kind nationally, broadly scalable, freely available – provides outreach through community-based CME and connects neonatologists directly with EMS via telehealth technology, aiming to optimize prehospital care for babies and their multidisciplinary care teams.
“Your commitment to EMS at the hospital, regional, and state level has had a positive impact on the EMS system in our state and beyond,” said William Fitzmaurice, President CORP, in a letter announcing the award.
Dr. Redmond started the 24/7 BABY in the Waterbury region in 2023 after helping train area EMS and recognizing the need for highly specialized expertise and support to EMS providers delivering and resuscitating babies during out-of-hospital births.
“Dr. Redmond’s dedication to her patients, her colleagues and the EMS community in Greater Waterbury is truly impressive. This is such a well-deserved award for a stand-out member of our medical staff,” said Waterbury HEALTH President and CEO Deborah K. Weymouth.
Dr. Redmond serves as a volunteer educator and content expert for Connecticut EMS and fire services. She is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. She is a 2024-2025 Public Voices Fellow at Yale with the OpEd Project. Through Yale's Fetal Care Center, she works with families prenatally, providing subspecialty consultation and coordination for high-risk pregnancies.
Dr. Redmond is a 2023 recipient of the Unsung Hero award by the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce Health Care Council for her work with 24/7 BABY.
Dr. Redmond is a graduate of Amherst College, and she was a high school science teacher in Washington DC prior to becoming a doctor. She earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Massachusetts and her Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine. She practiced neonatology in Columbus, Ohio in the Nationwide Children's Hospital system prior to returning to Yale to join the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM) faculty.
Dr. Redmond received her award at the Connecticut EMS Awards Ceremony at EMS & Fire Pro Expo on Oct. 24. Dr. Redmond was also a pediatric symposium speaker at the conference on the topic of neonatal resuscitation in the field, educating EMS professionals in attendance from around the country.
